THIS ARROGANT SOCIALITE HAD NO IDEA THE MAID SHE ACCUSED WAS THE FORTUNE'S HEIRESS

The crimson fabric of Eleanor’s designer gown swept across the marble floor like spilled blood as she stepped over the scattered pearls. The heavy gold necklace she had just ripped from the girl's hands clattered against the base of the ice sculpture, its diamonds catching the cold glare of the ballroom chandeliers.

"Look at this," Eleanor announced, her voice rising above the string quartet until the entire banquet hall fell silent. "Caught red-handed with family heirlooms tucked right into her apron. This is what happens when you let street rats handle high society's silver."

The young maid, Clara, remained on her knees, her breath coming in ragged hitches as she tried to gather the contents of her torn canvas bag. Her fingers, chapped from harsh cleaning chemicals, fumbled in the slush of melting ice and spilled champagne, her tears tracing clean lines through the dust on her cheeks.

"I didn't take them," Clara whispered, her voice cracking as she reached for a small, water-damaged square of paper that had drifted toward the edge of the velvet rug. "Please, they were already on the vanity table—"

"Save your breath for the police," Eleanor snapped, her mouth twisting into a smug smile as she looked around at the circle of wealthy guests, expecting nods of approval.

Instead, a sharp gasp cut through the front row of onlookers. Thomas Vance, the reclusive billionaire whose family name anchored the entire estate, pushed past the security guards with a sudden, frantic urgency that completely shattered his usual stoic composure.

He didn't look at Eleanor, and he didn't look at the glittering jewelry on the floor. His eyes were locked entirely on the faded, water-stained childhood photograph Clara was trying to shield with her trembling hand.

Thomas dropped to his knees directly into the wet puddle, his expensive tailored trousers soaking through instantly as his hand reached out, his fingers shaking as they hovered over the edge of the picture.

"Where did you get this?" Thomas breathed, his voice dropping into a raw, hollow whisper that made the entire room lean in closer.

Clara pulled her shoulders back, her gaze meeting the old man's for the first time. "It’s me. It’s the only thing I have left from before the orphanage in Boston."
