The Truth Behind the Stained Glass

The echoes of the groom's cruel laughter still rattled against the high stone arches of the cathedral, but the sound had completely lost its teeth.

Brendan’s shoulders went rigid beneath his wool morning coat, his proud posture slipping by a fraction of an inch. A single drop of sweat broke from his hairline, tracking slowly down to his jaw as he stared at the woman he had just tried to ruin.

"Tell them what, Maya?" Brendan asked, his voice dropping into a frantic, low hiss that didn't reach the front pews. "You're making a scene. Just take what's left of your dignity and walk out."

Maya didn't back away; instead, she reached up and calmly unpinned the heavy lace veil from her dark hair, letting it drop to the stone floor like a discarded battle flag.
