The True Value of a Name Under the Altar

The silence in the cathedral didn't just fall; it heavy-dropped like iron against the marble floor. Camila’s heavy satin train rustled loudly as she took a sharp step back, her manicured fingers tightly clutching her white rose bouquet like a shield.

"You really thought a family like mine would let a common clerk into the registry, Ethan?" Camila’s mother, Victoria, sneered from the front pew, her heavy diamond necklace catching the gold glare of the chandeliers. "You spent six months pretending you were part of our world, but your shoes give you away every time. You're a gold digger, and the game is over."

Ethan stood completely still beneath the high floral arch, his hands trembling so hard the small gold band between his fingers slipped, bouncing with a hollow, metallic ring against the stone. He didn't look at the three hundred guests who were now lowering their faces to whisper; his tearful eyes were locked entirely on Camila’s profile.

"Camila... seriously?" Ethan whispered, his voice cracking down the middle. "After everything we talked about? After the promises you made?"

Camila didn't meet his gaze. She looked straight ahead at the massive oak exit doors, her jaw set into a rigid, brittle line that completely erased the warmth she had shown him the night before. "My mother is right, Ethan," she said, her voice carrying a flat, mechanical chill. "Love doesn't pay the property taxes on the valley estate. I need a partner, not a dependent."

She turned on her heel, the heavy silk of her gown sweeping across the scattered white petals as she began her long, solitary walk back down the center aisle. Victoria followed a single pace behind, her sharp laughter drifting back toward the altar like a parting slap.

"Mr. Vance, your transport has arrived," a deep, resonant voice cut through the murmurs from the back of the hall.
