The True Melody Hidden in the Echo of the Crowd

The giant stadium speakers hummed with a low, vibrant frequency that resonated right through the soles of Sophia’s boots. Rain poured off the edge of the stage canopy in a thick, translucent sheet, blurring the thousands of glowing phone screens in the audience into a sea of fractured neon.

Sophia remained on her knees in the mud by the security barrier, her glittering performance jacket soaking through as she held the little girl close.

The child’s frantic breathing began to slow, her small pink jacket stained with dark rings of rainwater and stage-side grit.

A few feet away, the head of stadium security stood with his arms spread, forming a human wall against the surge of fans who had pressed forward when the music abruptly cut out. The stadium lights had been turned up to full brightness, casting a raw, white glare over the concrete trench between the front row and the stage.

"Can you hear me, sweetheart?" Sophia asked, her voice carrying a slight tremor that had nothing to do with the chilly wind. "Where does it hurt?"

The little girl didn't answer with words, instead burying her face deeper into the fabric of Sophia’s collar, her small hand clutching the round silver pendant.

Sophia gently eased her fingers around the metal casing, tilting the tiny frame toward the bright beam of a security flashlight. A subtle clue had been sitting right in her dressing room all tour—the vintage leather trunk she used for her stage wardrobe had a duplicate velvet lining with a missing circular cutout in the lid, exactly the size of the antique charm now resting in her palm.
