The True Master of the Canvas

The sticky, pale gold liquid dripped from the hem of my silk gown, pooling in a dark stain on the Persian rug beneath my wheels. The sharp, yeasty stench of expensive champagne filled the immediate air, but I didn't blink, keeping my gaze leveled at the diamond necklace resting against the collarbone of the woman towering over me. Around us, the low hum of polite conversation dipped for a fraction of a second, then resumed at a forced, louder pitch as billionaires and curators deliberately turned their backs to the spectacle.

The woman in the black dress tilted her crystal flute, letting the final few drops splash onto my lap before she offered a thin, venomous smile. She leaned down, her perfume suffocatingly sweet, and whispered that charity cases usually entered through the service elevator in the back.

I didn't reach for a napkin, nor did I look down at the ruined fabric of a dress that had cost more than her jewelry. Instead, I brushed a stray strand of hair behind my left ear, my index finger pressing the tiny, flesh-colored nodule nestled firmly against my jawline.
