The True Engine Running Beneath the School Yard

The twin exhaust pipes emitted a final, crisp pop that echoed off the brick facade of the science building, leaving a faint scent of high-octane fuel hanging in the warm afternoon air. The heavy wrought-iron security gates swung shut automatically with a definitive metallic clang, locking the courtyard away from the open road.

Jason remained frozen on the gravel path, his arms still half-folded against his chest as his classmates slowly drifted backward, their previous giggles replaced by a sharp, collective quiet.

The silence in the courtyard grew heavy, broken only by the steady, rhythmic clicking of the flagpole rope against the aluminum mast in the light breeze.
