The Sovereign Light Above the City Skyline

The topmost glass of the champagne tower didn't just fall; it shattered against the edge of the iron terrace railing, sending a jagged spike of crystal into the dark sky before the rest of the structure cascaded downward. Green glass and sparkling wine rushed across the gray marble in a wide, frothing wave, soaking the hems of three different silk gowns and leaving a dozen high society couples scrambling backward toward the dry tiles of the indoor lounge.

Victoria didn't brush the stray droplets from her bare shoulders, her chin tilted high as she looked down at the mess she had just made with a casual flick of her diamond-encrusted clutch. Her breathing was perfectly regular, her lips curved into a sharp, narrow smile that had spent thirty years terrifying the boardrooms and charity committees of the upper east side.

The young woman in the black catering vest didn't flinch as the tidal wave of alcohol lapped against the toes of her heavy leather work shoes. A single splinter of glass had caught in the fabric of her white apron, but her hands remained clasped loosely behind her back, her posture as straight and unyielding as a marble pillar.
