The Sound from the Sealed White Vault

The heavy velvet straps supporting the white coffin creaked under the weight of the gathering rain, the ropes vibrating with a low, tense hum. A single white lily rolled off the polished lacquer lid, landing face down in the freshly dug earth at the edge of the open plot.

The father, Arthur, stood with his hands suspended mid-air, his fingers frozen over the silver handles as the boy's desperate words echoed off the surrounding marble tombstones.

The security guard’s grip on the boy's mud-splattered jacket loosened just enough for the child to pull free, his small canvas shoes sinking deep into the waterlogged grass.

Beside them, the stepmother, Eleanor, kept her eyes fixed on the open grave, her black umbrella tilting just enough to cast a sharp, dark shadow over her pale features. The twenty mourning guests under the canopy remained entirely rigid, their whispers cut off so fast that the only sound left was the relentless, rhythmic drumming of the downpour against the canvas roof.

"Arthur, this is an absolute outrage," Eleanor said, her voice dropping into a forced, steady register that barely carried over the wind. "The child is a trespasser from the lower village; he shouldn’t be permitted to disrupt a private family service."

Arthur didn't answer her, his gaze slowly shifting from the boy's frantic hazel eyes down to the polished silver lock mechanism on the side of the casket.

A subtle clue had been staring him in the face since the wake yesterday evening—the custom medical bracelet his daughter always wore for her severe respiratory allergies wasn't listed in the hospital return bag, but a faint, distinct sweet scent of artificial cherry extract had been clinging to the collar of her velvet burial dress. Arthur reached into his coat pocket, his hand closing around the heavy brass key the funeral director had handed him for the final sealing ceremony.

"Leo," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a low, conversational baritone that carried a dangerous, quiet weight. "What color was the bottle you saw in the kitchen?"
