The Silence of the True Sovereign

The crystal glass didn't just shatter; it seemed to dissolve into a hundred sharp, glittering teeth against the marble floor. The arrogant guest, a minor baron named Julian whose family wealth was as loud as his velvet waistcoat, stepped back, his face twisting into an ugly mask of outrage as the wet stain spread across his Italian leather boot.

"Look at what you’ve done, you clumsy wretch," Julian sneered, his voice cutting through the soft orchestral music of the ballroom. He raised a hand, his heavy signet ring catching the gold light of the chandeliers, as if he intended to strike her right there under the frescoed ceiling.

Alina didn't flinch. She kept her chin tucked, her fingers tightly weaving together over the white cotton apron of her maid’s uniform. She had spent six months learning how to blend into the shadows of the Grand Bellemore Hotel, how to be invisible, but the sudden weight of every eye in the room was stripping her armor away piece by piece.
