The Price of True Value

The elegant dining room of the five-star restaurant fell into an immediate, suffocating silence.

Beneath the soft golden light, wealthy couples froze at their tables, their forks suspended in mid-air as all eyes locked onto the couple near the center glass pavilion. Andrew knelt on one knee, his hand perfectly steady as he held out a classic, brilliant-cut engagement ring with sincere, hopeful eyes.

For a long moment, the woman, Vanessa, said absolutely nothing. She simply stared down at the velvet box, her gaze critical and cold.

Then she laughed.

Loudly.

Cruelly.

“I’m too expensive for a man like you, Andrew,” she sneered, her voice carrying sharply across the room as stunned guests turned to watch. “Did you really think a simple ring from a mid-level analyst could keep up with my lifestyle?”
