The Price of a Traitor’s Toast

The heavy, dark synthetic oil continued to pool beneath the rear tire of the Mercedes-Maybach, its slow spread across the white gravel the only movement in the suffocating stillness of the driveway. The liquid catch-pan under the engine bay was entirely dry, proving the mechanical failure wasn't an oversight, but a deliberate extraction of the hydraulic line.

David Vance didn't step back from the luxury vehicle right away, his fingers remaining frozen against the carbon-fiber door frame as he stared at the small, oil-stained hands of the child. The boy, Toby, was shivering despite the midday heat, his ragged denim shirt damp with grease from his sprint across the outer estate boundaries.

"Who gave you the gate logs, Toby?" David asked, his voice dropping into a low, quiet cadence that made the security team along the perimeter fence instantly straighten their postures. "The security codes for the lower garage aren't listed on the standard maintenance schedule."

The boy didn't look up at the second-floor balcony, keeping his gray eyes fixed entirely on David's polished leather shoes. He reached into his oversized pocket and pulled out a small, water-damaged notebook featuring the official embossed gold stamp of the family's primary logistics firm.

"The driver from the auxiliary terminal left his transport book on the service desk last night, sir," Toby whispered, his voice small but remarkably clear in the freezing quiet of the courtyard. "There was a handwritten diagnostic bypass code written on the inside cover, right next to your departure timeline for the valley highway."

Above them, the sharp, metallic click of a silver spoon hitting a porcelain saucer cut through the air like a fracture. The wife, Evelyn, slowly lowered her teacup, her white silk sleeve rustling against the stone railing as her face completely drained of color under the bright sun.

"David, darling, what is the meaning of this delay?" Evelyn called down, her voice carrying a forced, rhythmic sweetness that failed to hide the sudden tremor in her chin. "The foundation board is meeting at the central office in twenty minutes. You cannot let a runaway child disrupt the compliance signing."

David didn't answer her, his focus remaining on the assistant who was now pulling a diagnostic data drive from the car's secondary port. The digital display on the handheld monitor flickered twice before flashing a bright red warning matrix across the screen.
