THE POLICE CHIEF SAW HIS DAUGHTER IN THE MUD... AND THE BOYS FROZE

The camera screen on Long’s phone shook slightly as he giggled, zooming in on the thick splatters of brown mud dripping from the sleeves of the white school uniform. Around him, three other boys were still chuckling, their devices held high to catch every angle of the humiliation for their social media channels.

"Make sure you get her face," one of them whispered, nudging Long with an elbow. "The views on this are going to be insane by midnight."

Down in the ditch, fifteen-year-old Lan sat perfectly still, her hands gripping the bent metal rims of her wheelchair. The impact had thrown her off balance, forcing her wheels deep into the wet, clay-heavy earth at the bottom of the embankment. She didn't scream, and she didn't look up at them. She simply reached into the small pocket of her mud-soaked backpack and pulled out a cracked smartphone, her fingers trembling as she swiped the screen with a muddy thumb.

"Look at her, she’s trying to call for backup," Long mocked, stepping closer to the edge of the slope. "Who are you calling, little girl? The school principal?"

Lan pressed the phone to her ear, her breath hitching as the call connected on the very first ring.

"Dad," she choked out, her voice small, cracking under the weight of the rain and the absolute shame of the moment. "Save me. I'm at the old quarry road."
