The Naked Truth Beneath the Altar

The Naked Truth Beneath the Altar

The echo of his laughter did not bounce off the high vaulted ceilings of the cathedral; it seemed to flatten against the stone, absorbed by the collective intake of breath from three hundred people in the pews. Michael’s face remained twisted in that sharp, practiced grin, his hand still casually tucked into the pocket of his bespoke morning coat as if he had just delivered a particularly clever toast.

Amanda’s veil had shifted when she flinched, the delicate tulle catching on the diamond pin at her temple and pulling her dark hair loose on one side. A single drop of moisture fell from her chin, dark against the heavy ivory satin of her bodice, but her shoulders did not shake.

The silence that followed was absolute, the kind of quiet that belongs to a courtroom before a verdict rather than a June wedding. In the third row, Michael’s mother stopped fanning herself with the program, the stiff linen paper frozen mid-air like a broken wing.

"Now tell them the truth," Amanda said.

Her voice was not loud, but it possessed a peculiar, dry clarity that carried easily to the back rows where the distant relatives sat. The trembling in her lower lip was gone, replaced by a stillness so sudden it made Michael’s smile falter at the corners.

Michael cleared his throat, his posture stiffening as he glanced toward the front pew where his business partners were seated. "Amanda, don't make a scene. You’ve had your moment. Just take your things and—"

"Tell them about the offshore accounts in Belize, Michael," she interrupted, her hands coming together in front of her, fingers interlacing with a calm, methodical precision.
