The Mirage of the Altar

The grand memorial hall fell into an immediate, suffocating silence.

Beneath the soft, flickering yellow lights, the elite guests dressed in immaculate black stood perfectly frozen, their eyes locking onto the shattered fragments of the seashell scattered across the polished white marble.

Victoria’s chest heaved with a sharp, defensive rage, her manicured fingers clenching into a tight fist as she stared down at the crying little girl.

“You and your mother have no place in this estate!” Victoria hissed, her voice cutting through the silence like ice. “Security, remove this child and her disruptive behavior from the property immediately!”

But the security guards didn't move a single inch.

The deceased man’s son-in-law, Arthur, remained on his knees on the cold stone floor, his hands trembling violently as he held the delicate white lace garter he had just pulled from the debris. His face turned a ghostly, sickly pale, all the color completely draining from his skin as he stared at the specific serial registry number meticulously stitched into the old lace.

He rose to his full height slowly, his focused gaze moving from the cloth in his hand to the massive memorial portrait resting above the fireplace.

“Victoria…” Arthur’s voice cracked, yet it carried a terrifying, resonant clarity that filled every silent corner of the cavernous room.

The guests held their breath, the ambient whispers dying out instantly.

“Why is the name Maya Elena on the list of the deceased at this public service,” Arthur demanded, stepping directly into Victoria's personal space, “when this active medical registration tag proves she was signed out of the private clinic alive just two hours ago?”
