The Lost Reflection Welcomed Home From the Storm

The Lost Reflection Welcomed Home From the Storm

The black nylon umbrella frame vibrated violently as another heavy gust of wind swept down the concrete avenue, sending a spray of freezing water across Clara’s face. She didn't blink or wipe the moisture away; her entire body had gone completely rigid, her leather boots pooling in a deep puddle at the edge of the curb.

Beside her, her son Leo pulled gently on her sleeve, his small face tilted upward in quiet confusion as he watched her expression shatter.

Across the asphalt, beneath the rusted metal awning of an abandoned pharmacy, the shivering child kept his arms wrapped tightly around his chest.

He took a tiny, hesitant bite of the soggy hamburger bun, his large hazel eyes darting nervously between the luxury vehicles rushing past and the elegant woman staring at him from across the street. The heavy, dark red birthmark on the left side of his neck—shaped precisely like a crescent moon—gleamed under the flickering fluorescent light of the storefront.

"Stay right here, Leo," Clara whispered, her voice dropping into a breathless, fractured register that barely carried over the roar of the downpour. "Don't let go of the handle."

She thrust the umbrella into Leo’s small hands and stepped directly into the street, completely ignoring the sharp honk of a passing yellow taxi that swerved to avoid her.

Her expensive wool coat soaked through in a matter of seconds, the heavy fabric dragging against her knees as she sprinted toward the opposite sidewalk. A subtle clue had been right there on her phone screen all morning—the private investigator’s automated daily alert had flagged a regional transit ticket registered to a closed shelter just four blocks away.
