The Lost Legacy Floating in the Light of the Palace

The heavy silver frame of a sapphire brooch clicked against the edge of a gold coin, the sound vibrating through the absolute stillness of the royal banquet hall. The pearls that had spilled from the canvas bag settled into the deep crevices of the marble floor, looking pale and out of place beneath the blinding flash of the press cameras.

The gentleman, Lord Alistair, didn't touch the scattered diamonds or the gold chains. His fingers, heavy with signet rings that bore the crest of the oldest estate in the valley, were locked onto the frayed edge of a sepia-toned print that had been creased at the corner.

"Where did you find this?" Alistair asked, his voice losing its usual commanding resonance, dropping to a dry, desperate whisper that barely carried to the front row of the diplomatic circle. "Tell me the name of the woman who gave this to you."

The socialite, Evelyn, took a sharp step forward, her red sequin gown catching the light like burning coal as she tried to block his view with her satin clutch. "Alistair, don't touch that dirty paper. She probably took it from the gallery archives during the spring cleaning shift."

The maid, Clara, didn't reach for the scattered jewelry, keeping her hands tucked tightly against the rough apron of her uniform. She looked up through her tears, her gray eyes reflecting the warm, gold light of the chandeliers with an intensity that made Alistair's breath hitch in his throat.
