The Legacy Protected Inside the Chamber of State

The small, scratched edge of the silver box clicked softly against the polished mahogany of the central podium, the sound carrying clearly into the absolute silence of the parliamentary chamber. A single, heavy tear from the boy's cheek fell onto the tarnished metal lid, cutting through the thin layer of dust that had gathered on its surface during his long journey to the capital city.

The congresswoman, Victoria, didn't call for the security detail to resume their approach, her hand remaining completely frozen over the open lid. The faded ink of the letter inside caught the bright glare of the overhead chandeliers, exposing the distinctive, elegant handwriting she had not seen since the winter of 2011.

"Where did you find this, Leo?" Victoria asked, her voice losing its usual commanding, legislative volume and dropping into a flat, restricted whisper that failed to hide the sudden, sharp tremor in her chin. "The state registry office finalized the relocation files twelve years ago. They said the northern settlement was completely vacated after the logging industry closed down."

The boy, Leo, didn't back away from the dais, keeping his wide, gray eyes fixed entirely on her face as the surrounding lawmakers watched from their tiered seats in utter fascination. He reached into the pocket of his oversized canvas jacket, pulling out a small, heavy iron key that perfectly matched the intricate lock on the box's front panel.
