The Legacy Claimed in the Silence of the Hall

The gold columns of the grand ballroom cast long, distorted shadows across the marble floor, gleaming under the massive crystal chandeliers. The lawyer, his expensive leather portfolio clutched against his ribs like a shield, took a slow step backward, his polished black oxford shoes clicking sharply against the stone.

Beside him, the family members who had been whispering from the front row went entirely rigid, their faces draining of color in the harsh, festive light.

The elderly woman on the floor, Victoria, let out a ragged, trembling breath, her fingers loosening their frantic grip on the gold-embossed pen. She looked up at the young woman standing over her, searching the quiet intensity of her hazel eyes and the familiar, stubborn set of her jawline.

"No," a voice shouted from the back of the family section, breaking the sudden, suffocating quiet. "David never had children; his estate records were cleared by the probate courts two years ago."

The young woman, Maya, didn't turn to face the shouting voice, keeping her focus entirely on the lawyer whose knuckles were turning white against his briefcase.
