The Ledger That Proved the King Was a Thief

The echo of his cruel, mocking laughter bounced off the vaulted stone ceilings of the cathedral, sharp and hollow as a breaking glass. A low, critical murmur rippled through the rows of mahogany pews, where three hundred of the city’s most prominent families sat adorned in diamonds and silk. My hand trembled against the lace fabric of my gown, my chin dropping toward my chest as the hot, burning sting of public humiliation forced a solitary tear down my cheek.

He leaned closer, his voice dropping into a low, venomous whisper, stating that a girl from the eastern tenement blocks should have known better than to think she could ever wear the family ring.

His mother sneered from the front row, adjusting her fur stole as if the very air in the sanctuary had been tainted by my presence. The church coordinators stepped forward, preparing to quietly escort me out through the side vestibule so the reception could be salvaged for a more suitable match.
