The Ice in the Dining Room

The clinking of stainless-steel spoons against ceramic bowls was the only sound in the cramped dining room. The three children sat at the table, eagerly scooping up large portions of fragrant jasmine rice and savory braised pork, their faces completely indifferent to the shadow standing just past the threshold.

Leo didn't cry. He simply stood at the edge of the kitchen tiles, his small hands gripped tightly behind his back, his eyes fixed on the empty space near the rice cooker. He hadn't had a proper meal since yesterday morning, but he kept his voice steady, flat, and remarkably polite as he asked if there was any rice left in the pot.

His stepmother didn't even turn around from the sink. She carefully wiped down the counter, her movements deliberate and slow, before serving the final portions onto the three plates already on the table.

"I only cooked for my own children," she said, her voice dripping with a cold, casual dismissiveness that carried perfectly across the quiet room. "If you're hungry, you can wait until tomorrow."
