THE GREEDY HOTEL MANAGER STOLE A SUITCASE... THEN HER BOSS CLOSED THE LAPTOP

The hum of the office air conditioning was the only sound left in the executive suite. Evelyn's fingers tightened around the strap of her designer handbag, her knuckles turning a sharp, bloodless white against the leather. The manic maniacal laugh that had echoed through the back corridors ten minutes ago was entirely gone, replaced by a sudden, metallic taste of fear at the back of her throat.

Mr. Vance sat behind the wide mahogany desk, his tailored charcoal suit jacket perfectly buttoned despite the late hour. He didn't look up immediately. He was focused on the glowing screen of his laptop, his fingers tapping a slow, rhythmic pattern against the polished wood.

"Are you certain, Evelyn?" he asked, his voice deceptively low, almost conversational. "A black leather case. Left under the booth in section four. Our primary investor claims he walked out without it after the lunch rush."

"Completely certain, sir," Evelyn said, her voice steady, an immaculate performance of professional concern. She even managed a slight, sympathetic sigh. "I personally checked the floor logs and spoke with the clearing staff. Nothing was found. You know how transient the afternoon crowd can be—someone must have swiped it before we noticed the table was empty."

Mr. Vance stopped tapping. He slowly lowered the lid of his laptop until it shut with a soft, definitive click that sounded exactly like a trap springing shut.

"That's a remarkable coincidence," he murmured, finally looking up. His eyes were entirely devoid of warmth, cold as the ice in the champagne buckets downstairs. "Because less than twenty minutes ago, Clara came to my office in tears."

Evelyn's breath hitched. She forced a rigid, condescending smile onto her face, her mind racing to construct a defense. "Clara? Sir, you can't take the word of a junior waitress over mine. The girl is pregnant, highly emotional, and frankly, she's been struggling with her efficiency scores all month. I actually had to reprimand her today for handling guest property improperly."

"She didn't handle it improperly, Evelyn," Mr. Vance said, leaning forward, resting his forearms on the desk. "She brought it directly to your station. And according to the service corridor camera, you shoved her against the linen cart before locking yourself in the manager's office with it."

The room seemed to tilt. The ambient warmth of the five-star hotel dissolved, leaving Evelyn standing in a freezing, suffocating void. She took a half-step back, her heels clicking weakly against the floor.
