The Final Confession in Room Four Hundred and Two

The sterile scent of antiseptic and rubbing alcohol stung Leo’s throat, a brutal contrast to the sweet fragrance of the wedding lilies he had left behind on the altar. Beneath the harsh fluorescent lights of the intensive care unit, Yohanda’s face looked almost translucent, her dark hair splayed across the stiff white pillow like ink on snow.

The heart monitor beside her bed emitted a slow, fragile ping that seemed to stretch the seconds into agonizing hours.

Leo squeezed her hand, his fingers trembling against her cold skin, completely unconcerned with the wet trail of tears soaking into his tuxedo lapel.

"I'm here, Yo," he choked out, his voice a jagged whisper that barely carried over the hum of the oxygen machine. "The little girl—she found me. She brought the picture from the summer in Madrid."

Yohanda’s eyelids fluttered, her gaze clearing just enough to focus on the man who had vanished from her life five years ago without a trace.

Her lips parted, a faint, raspy breath escaping as she tried to form words through the plastic oxygen mask resting over her nose. A subtle clue had been staring him in the face when the child handed him the torn photograph back at the chapel—the edges weren't cut by scissors, but ripped frantically, matching the missing half of the snapshot Leo had kept tucked inside his passport for half a decade.

The background of that photo wasn't a tourist square, but the entrance of a prominent medical research foundation his own family operated.
