The Eyes Behind the Polished Wood

The heavy oak doors of the funeral home didn't just swing open; they slammed against the drywall with a force that shattered the glass of a nearby sconce. A cold, winter wind howled into the candlelit sanctuary, scattering white rose petals across the aisle as I stumbled inside, my chest heaving, my boots leaving tracking mud on the plush carpet. Behind me, the muffled protests of the pallbearers died out as every head in the chapel turned toward me in absolute shock.
