The Executive Who Was Evicted from Her Own Gala

The white confetti of the destroyed ticket lay scattered around the toes of Clara’s designer heels. She still held her hands out, fingers slightly curled from the force of ripping the paper, her breathing shallow beneath the heavy layers of her black fur coat.

A sharp, digital chime echoed from the ceiling speakers as the main display transitioned from the corporate logo to a high-definition portrait. The text underneath the image glowed in sharp gold lettering: Welcome Home, Dr. Elena Vance, Chief Executive Officer and Founder.

Clara’s gaze slowly moved from the screen back down to the woman standing three feet away. Elena didn't reach for her coat or try to brush away the glances of the hundred board members who had suddenly gone entirely rigid.

"Elena?" Clara’s voice was barely a squeak, the polished, aggressive tone she had used moments earlier dissolving completely. "The board said the new director was arriving from London next month."

Elena didn't answer immediately, her hand still resting flat against the dark wool of her maternity dress. She looked down at the torn pieces of paper between them, then signaled to the young man in the charcoal suit standing by the velvet ropes.

"The London flight landed at noon, Clara," the assistant said, his voice carrying clearly through the silent reception area as he handed Elena a leather bound folder. "Dr. Vance chose to skip the police escort from the terminal."

The senior vice president, who had been laughing by the champagne fountain, suddenly set his glass down so hard the stem snapped against the crystal rim. Nobody moved to clean it up; every eye remained locked on the entrance mat.

"You were dressed like a courier," Clara stammered, her hands dropping to the pockets of her fur coat as she tried to find a pocket of space to step back into. "You were standing in the general admission line."

"I was checking the security protocol for the staff entrance," Elena said, her voice low, even, and entirely devoid of the theatrical anger Clara had expected. "I wanted to see how our guests are treated when they don't have a gold badge around their neck."
