The Evidence in the Shards

The grand memorial hall fell into a sudden, suffocating silence.

Beneath the soft golden light of the massive chandeliers, guests dressed in immaculate black stood motionless, their heads bowed in respect. Pristine white lilies lined the marble fireplace, surrounding a large, gilded portrait of the deceased.

At the front of the room, a little girl stepped forward from the shadows. Her small hands tightly clutched a fragile seashell decorated with a hand-painted tiny heart. Tears shimmered in her eyes as she walked toward the memorial altar.

Before she could reach it, a woman in an expensive designer gown blocked her path. It was Victoria—the elegant, cold, and calculating matriarch of the family estate.

“You are not allowed near my family,” Victoria said, her voice dropping into a sharp, freezing whisper that cut through the silence.

The little girl looked up nervously, her bottom lip trembling. “My mother said... he really needed this.” She carefully held out the seashell.

Victoria’s expression darkened instantly. Without a second thought—

SMASH!

With a brutal sweep of her hand, she slapped the keepsake from the child’s grip. The seashell crashed violently against the polished marble floor, fracturing into a dozen sharp fragments that scattered across the stone.

The little girl gasped, bursting into frantic tears. Several guests looked away uncomfortably, refusing to cross Victoria, but the grieving husband, Arthur, did not look away.

His eyes locked onto the debris. Something hidden among the shattered white fragments caught his attention. Arthur slowly stepped forward, dropped to his knees, and carefully retrieved a small object that had been concealed inside the hollow of the shell.

He froze.

It wasn't a piece of the shell. It was an elegant white lace garter, meticulously embroidered with a specific serial registry number from a private medical facility. His hands began to tremble violently. The air in the room suddenly felt entirely colder.

Arthur stared at the lace, then slowly lifted his eyes toward the grand memorial portrait on the wall, reading the name engraved beneath the flowers. A name everyone in high society believed they understood.

He rose to his feet and turned toward his wife, his face completely drained of color.

“Victoria…” his voice was barely a whisper, yet it carried a terrifying weight.
