THE EMPEROR SAW THE LION KNEEL... AND THE ARENA WENT SILENT

The stadium was so quiet that the crackle of the emperor's silk banners in the wind sounded like tearing cloth. The thousands of wealthy citizens who had been cheering for blood a moment ago sat frozen in their stone seats, their half-eaten figs and golden chalices forgotten in their hands.

Emperor Valerius stood at the edge of his velvet-lined imperial box, his white knuckles gripping the marble balustrade so tightly his signet ring groaned against the stone. His chest heaved beneath his gold-embroidered tunic, his face a sudden, sickly pale contrast to the purple robes of his office. He stared down into the dust of the arena floor, where the massive, five-hundred-pound black lion was currently resting its massive jaw against the boy's frayed sandals, purring with a low, rumbling vibration that shook the dirt.

"Guards," Valerius whispered, his voice cracking, a sound that shook the faith of the senators standing behind him. He swallowed hard, his eyes darting to the crowd that was now whispering in a rising, terrified wave. "Guards! Kill the beast! Kill the boy! Execute them both now!"

But the pretorian guards at the arena gates didn't advance. They held their bronze spears with trembling hands, their eyes fixed on the child who was no longer shivering.

The boy, Eli, slowly opened his eyes. He didn't look up at the tyrant in the luxury box; he looked down at the great black predator. He recognized the notched scar over the beast's left eye—the very same lion he had found caught in a heavy iron poacher's trap in the northern woods two winters ago, back when his father was still alive and the fields were still green. Eli had spent three long nights fetching water and packing wet clay onto the animal’s festering leg wound until it had the strength to break the chains and vanish into the brush.

"He remembers," Eli murmured, his voice small but carrying perfectly across the dead air of the stadium.

He placed his small, bruised hand on the lion's massive, obsidian-furred shoulder. The beast stood up, its amber eyes locked onto the imperial balcony, its upper lip curling back to reveal rows of yellow, razor-sharp teeth as a low, menacing growl tore from its throat.
