The Echo of the Colosseum Gates

The roar of fifty thousand citizens bounced off the stone tiers of the grand amphitheater, a deafening wave of noise that seemed to shake the very foundations of the imperial box. High above the sand, the emperor sat draped in Tyrian purple, his fingers casually tracing the rim of a golden chalice as he looked down at the day's main attraction.

In the center of the vast, scorching arena stood a nine-year-old boy, his frame thin and hollowed by months of famine, his ankles bound by heavy iron links that dragged in the dust. His crime had been written on the public ledger that morning: the theft of a single loaf of barley bread from the palace kitchens.

Chained and entirely alone beneath the shadow of the velvet awnings, the boy looked up toward the imperial box, his voice cracking as he tried to explain to the unhearing crowd that he had only needed the grain to sustain his ailing sister in the lower districts.
