The Echo Across the Marble Floor

The heavy brass doors of the rotunda didn't just slam; they struck the stone jambs with a hollow, booming thud that silenced the murmur of the afternoon legislative session. Before the echo could fade, the hurried scuffle of leather-soled security boots scrambled across the polished marble, chasing the frantic, uneven footsteps of an eight-year-old boy in a frayed denim jacket.

He didn't make it to the center aisle before a thick, uniformed arm blocked his chest, forcing him back against the mahogany carving of the gallery rail. The boy didn't drop the battered silver box, locking both arms around the tarnished metal as if it were the only solid object left in the world.
