The Dark Shards of the Horizon Lounge

The slow, rhythmic drip of golden champagne from the edge of the glass tier onto the black marble floor was the only sound left on the high-rise terrace. A single intact crystal glass rolled out of the wreckage, hitting the base of a glowing neon planter with a soft click before fracturing under the sudden, freezing silence of the crowd.

The socialite, Victoria, kept her hand extended over the empty space where the table had been, her fingers trembling so violently that her gold cuffs rattled against her skin. Her pristine white suit was spotted with dark splashes of alcohol, the fabric clinging awkwardly to her ribs as the arrogant smirk she had worn all evening dissolved completely.

"This is an absurd, theatrical display," Victoria whispered, her voice dropping into a flat, restricted register that failed to hide the sudden panic in her throat. "The security registry for this exclusive launch was finalized by the development board yesterday morning. You are an hourly worker hired from the municipal placement center."

The waitress, Helena, didn't look down at the shards of glass piercing the wet fabric of her uniform shoes, nor did she acknowledge the line of imposing security personnel now flanking her. She slowly adjusted the collar of her jacket, allowing the magnificent crown-shaped heart necklace to catch the full glare of the purple neon lights above.
