The Dark Liquid on the Gravel Path

The black Mercedes-Maybach sat entirely still, its high-performance exhaust pipe emitting a hot, soft hiss into the humid afternoon air. The dark, synthetic fluid continued to pool beneath the rear tire, slowly spreading across the pristine white gravel of the villa's courtyard until it touched the hem of the chauffeur's trousers.

David didn't step out of the rear passenger compartment right away, his fingers frozen against the leather armrest as his gaze locked onto the small, dust-coated hands still pressing against his window. The boy’s breathing was rapid, leaving tiny, frantic patches of condensation on the dark tinted glass.

"Who told you to come here, Toby?" David asked, his voice dropping into a flat, restricted whisper that made the assistant standing outside the door go instantly rigid. "Who gave you the key to the side service gate?"

The boy didn't look up at the second-floor balcony, keeping his wide, terrified gray eyes fixed entirely on David’s face. "The driver from the repair shop left his logbook on the kitchen counter last night, sir. There was a handwritten note inside with the garage door bypass code and your departure schedule."

On the terrace above, the sharp, metallic click of a silver spoon hitting a porcelain saucer cut through the suffocating quiet of the driveway. Vanessa slowly set her teacup down, her white silk robe rustling softly as she gripped the stone railing, her knuckles turning a stark, bloodless white under the bright sun.

"David, darling, what is the meaning of this delay?" Vanessa called down, her voice carrying a forced, rhythmic sweetness that didn't reach her eyes. "The legacy foundation board is meeting in thirty minutes. You can't let a stray street child disrupt the compliance signing."

David didn't answer her, his focus remaining on the small, grease-stained leather notebook Toby was now pulling from the pocket of his oversized denim overalls. The edges were charred from a furnace fire, but the gilt-edged pages clearly showed the structural diagrams of the Maybach’s hydraulic reserve lines.
