The Breath in the Shadow

The solemn atmosphere of the grand mausoleum fell into a sudden, suffocating panic.

Beneath the flickering glow of the funeral candles, the elite mourners stood perfectly frozen, their eyes locking onto the young man, Julian, who was desperately gripping the brass handles of the heavy mahogany casket.

His stepmother, Victoria, stood at the head of the altar, her face turning a ghostly, sickly pale beneath her black lace veil. Her hands shook violently as she gestured frantically to the private security guards standing by the exit.

“Get him away from there!” Victoria shrieked, her voice cracking in a high-pitched terror that echoed off the high marble ceilings. “He is hysterical! The medical board explicitly stated the containment seal cannot be breached under any circumstances due to the contagion risk!”

But Julian didn't back down. The absolute urgency in his chest overrode every rule of the estate.

He had noticed the subtle, rhythmic vibration against the lower panel of the wood—a faint, desperate tapping that no one else in the mourning crowd had stayed quiet enough to hear. With a sudden, forceful heave, Julian jammed a silver ceremonial crowbar beneath the reinforced lid, ignoring the gasps of horror rippling through the rows of relatives.

"Stop him!" Victoria screamed, stepping forward to grab his arm, her eyes wide with the unmistakable fear of exposure. "You'll ruin the family's final respects!"
