The Bloodline That Sealed the Mansion Doors

The low hum of the string ensemble in the adjacent ballroom seemed to falter, the notes stretching out into a tense, discordant vibration that died against the high marble walls of the foyer. The man in the black suit, Marcus Vance, didn't immediately break his stride as his hand left the heavy brass handle of the front door.

He unbuttoned the top button of his overcoat with a slow, deliberate twist of his wrist, his gaze dropping to the faint, widening crimson mark on the boy's left cheek.

The woman in the dark blue satin dress, Beatrice, took a sharp, shallow breath, her diamond rings clicking against each other as her fingers began to shake against her silk clutch.

She tried to smooth the front of her gown, her aristocratic posture stiffening into a defensive line, but her eyes remained locked on the mud tracking across her immaculate white rug from Marcus’s leather boots. The enormous entrance hall, usually filled with the artificial warmth of high-society chatter, suddenly felt as cold as a concrete vault.
