The Bloodline Left Waiting at the Church Gates

The heavy scent of hundreds of imported white roses suddenly felt suffocating as an absolute, deadening silence fell over the cathedral. My hand remained outstretched, my white lace glove pointing directly at the small, dirty canvas shoes stepping onto the immaculate silk aisle runner. Behind the little girl, the heavy oak doors of the sanctuary remained slightly ajar, letting in a bitter draft of winter air that made the altar candles flicker wildly.

I glared at the church coordinators, my voice sharp and demanding as I ordered them to remove the intruders before they ruined the professional photographs.
