The Bleeding of the White Rose Petals

The sound of the strike echoed sharply through the vaulted cathedral, cutting off the pipe organ's heavy melody mid-chord. A dozen white roses slipped from the elderly woman’s trembling hands, their pristine petals scattering across the polished marble floor like winter snow. My gloved palm burned from the force of the blow, my chest heaving beneath the tight boning of my couture gown as I glared at the frail figure before me. Around us, three hundred of the city's most elite guests froze in their pews, the rustle of silk and polite murmurs dying instantly into a suffocating, collective silence.
