The Bitter Truth in the Crystal Glass

The shattered glass didn't just break; it detonated against the polished mahogany of the head table. A bright, sticky puddle of orange juice began to spread across the pristine white linen, soaking into the lace trim of the centerpieces while the room's collective breath caught in a single, sharp gasp.

The bride, Julianna, didn't hesitate for a fraction of a second. Her arm swung in a tight, furious arc, her palm striking the maid’s cheek with a wet, cracking sound that echoed off the high vaulted ceilings of the reception hall. "You clumsy, miserable wretch," Julianna hissed, her voice vibrating with a theatrical, manufactured outrage that tore through the sudden silence. "You've ruined the toast. Get out before I have security throw you into the street."

Clara staggered backward, her hand flying to her stinging cheek where a deep crimson welt was already beginning to form beneath her tears. The white lace apron of her uniform was stained with the orange residue of the ruined drink, but she didn't look down at herself. Her eyes, wide and terrified, were locked entirely on the groom, David.

"Don't drink... please, David, listen to me," Clara whispered, her voice cracking under the weight of the panic that had driven her across the floor. "Something was put in that glass."

David stood entirely motionless, his hand still shaped as if it were holding the stem of the crystal flute. His face had gone the color of skim milk, his gaze darting from the dripping liquid on the table to the rigid, trembling figure of his new wife. "Clara, what are you talking about?" he asked, his voice losing all its celebratory warmth. "You're making a scene."

"She’s losing her mind," Julianna interrupted smoothly, reaching out to grip David’s arm with a desperate, white-knuckled intensity. "She’s been jealous of this wedding from the very beginning, David. Look at her. She’s trying to destroy our day because she has nothing of her own."
