The Bitter Cost of a Shallow Judgment

The sharp, metallic click of Valeria’s high heels against the white marble was the only sound left in the massive hall. A single drop of spilled champagne ran down the side of her glass, pooling onto the mahogany edge of the display table before settling into the sudden, suffocating quiet.

Her father, Duke Raymond, remained bowed, his posture entirely rigid, his grey hair catching the bright glare of the crystal chandeliers.

Across the aisle, the young man in the black tuxedo, Julian, kept his gaze locked on her, his expression completely unreadable, a statue of quiet authority under the soft golden lights. Valeria’s arm dropped slowly to her side, her fingers tightening around her silk purse until her knuckles turned a stiff, pale white.

"Father, what is the meaning of this?" Valeria finally managed to whisper, her voice cracking as she looked at the rows of wealthy guests who were already lowering their heads. "He was listed under the staff transport manifest this morning."
